History of the Brand
The Canary Islands have their own herb-liqueur tradition, closer to Iberian licor de hierbas than to Italian amaro, built on plants gathered in the volcanic uplands rather than imported roots and barks.
Agala takes that tradition and organises it by altitude: each bottling in the range carries the elevation, in metres, of the terrain its botanicals come from, with 1175 sitting in the mid-mountain band of Gran Canaria's interior.
The house style is aromatic rather than punishing — herbal and lightly sweet, meant as an after-dinner pour in the island's guachinches and restaurants.
Off-island it remains a specialist bottle, mostly found through Spanish importers and Canarian shops, and increasingly used by bartenders looking for a Mediterranean herbal note that is neither Chartreuse nor Fernet.
Tasting Characteristics
Thyme and rosemary, wild mint and a little orange blossom.
Soft and rounded, honeyed herbs over a green scrubland note, with fennel and chamomile behind.
Clean and cooling, drying gently into mint and eucalyptus.
