History of the Brand
Pasquale Vena's Pisticci pastry shop produced the original Amaro Lucano in 1894; the House of Savoy made it a court supplier and the brand became Basilicata's most famous export.
Essenza was created for a bar trade that wanted Lucano's aromatics without its sweetness — a stiffer, drier expression that survives ice and citrus.
It sits beside Anniversario in the house's premium tier, with Essenza the more herbal and Anniversario the more barrel-shaped.

Amaro Lucano Essenza FAQ
How is Essenza different from regular Amaro Lucano?
+
It is higher in proof, noticeably drier and more herbal, with the same holy-thistle signature but far less sugar.
Can I substitute Essenza for Averna?
+
Yes, and it is a good swap when a drink tastes too sweet — expect a drier, more aromatic result.
