The Method
How to make it
- 01
Clap the mint leaves between your palms and drop them into a julep cup.
- 02
Add the bourbon, amaro and syrup if you're using it.
- 03
Pack the cup two-thirds full with crushed ice and churn with a bar spoon until it frosts.
- 04
Mound more crushed ice on top, plant a mint bouquet against the straw, and serve.
Bartender's Tip
Cut the straw short so it sits just above the ice. You want your nose in the mint on every sip — that is most of the drink.
A Little History
The julep predates the word cocktail, and bartenders have split its base with everything from rum to cognac. The amaro version belongs to the same wave of American bitter-forward drinking that produced the Black Manhattan, using amaro's caramel and root-bitterness in place of extra sugar.
