Black Nail
Irish whiskey and Fernet — the Rusty Nail's dark cousin.

The Method
How to make it
- 01
Stir the whiskey and Fernet over ice for twenty seconds.
- 02
Strain over one large cube in a rocks glass.
- 03
Twist a strip of lemon peel over the top and rest it on the ice.
Bartender's Tip
Chill the glass and the whiskey. This is a two-ingredient drink with nowhere to hide, and warmth reads as bitterness here.
A Little History
A Rusty Nail rebuilt in an Irish bar: Drambuie out, Fernet in, Scotch swapped for something gentler. It spread through American Irish pubs during the Fernet craze of the late 2000s, when San Francisco bartenders proved the stuff belonged in glasses as well as shot cups.
