Cobble Hill cocktail served in a coupe — Rye, dry vermouth and Amaro Montenegro, cooled down with cucumber.

The Method

How to make it

  1. 01

Muddle the cucumber slices gently in the bottom of a shaker — press, don't pulverise.

  2. 02

Add the rye, dry vermouth and Montenegro with ice.

  3. 03

    Shake for ten seconds.

  4. 04

Double-strain into a chilled coupe and garnish with a cucumber ribbon.

Bartender's Tip

Double-straining matters here. Cucumber pulp left in the glass turns the drink cloudy and vegetal within a minute.

A Little History

Created by Sam Ross at Milk & Honey in New York, the same bar and the same bartender behind the Paper Plane. It is the gentlest of the Brooklyn neighborhood drinks and the one most likely to convert someone who thinks they dislike amaro.
