Ingredients
A classic fernet formula — bitter roots, mint and saffron in a high-proof, unsweetened style — from the Veneto house better known for maraschino.
History of the Brand
Girolamo Luxardo founded the family distillery in Zara in 1821, building it on marasca cherries and the maraschino that still carries the name.
The family fled to Italy after the Second World War and rebuilt at Torreglia in the Veneto hills, where they replanted marasca orchards and restarted the full liqueur range.
Fernet was part of that range from the earlier Zara years, when every serious Italian house made one, and the recipe survived the move intact.
It is now the quiet alternative for drinkers who find Branca too medicinal — recognisably fernet, but with more saffron sweetness and less menthol assault.
Tasting Characteristics
Peppermint and saffron, myrrh and a dusty bitter-root note.
Dry and firm, mint leading, then gentian and rhubarb with a saffron floral thread.
Cooling, bitter and long, less aggressively menthol than Fernet-Branca.
